Los \u00e1rboles escaneados incluyen el \u00e1rbol <em>Colonel Armstrong<\/em> de 88 metros de altura, con un di\u00e1metro a la altura del pecho de 3,39 metros, con un peso estimado de 110 toneladas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los investigadores de la NASA y la universidad de Londres, compararon estas primeras estimaciones del escaneo laser terrestre (Terrestrial Laser Scanning en ingl\u00e9s) con otros m\u00e9todos y encontraron que sus estimaciones se correlacionaban con las del mapeo de copas en 3D, una t\u00e9cnica iniciada por el bot\u00e1nico estadounidense Stephen Sillett que involucra a escaladores expertos que escalan secuoyas gigantes para registrar manualmente detalles finos sobre su altura y masa; haciendo que el m\u00e9todo del l\u00e1ser haga m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil el trabajo de diversas organizaciones que buscan determinar la contextura de la biomasa de los \u00e1rboles en el mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El equipo del profesor Disney descubri\u00f3 que sus c\u00e1lculos por el m\u00e9todo de biomasa a\u00e9rea estaban de acuerdo con un 2% de los registros del mapeo de coronas.
